Official: Lawmakers may approve bill on higher retirement age Sep

SARANSK, Jun 15 (PRIME) -- The law raising the retirement age in Russia may be adopted already in September, Chairwoman of the Federation Council, parliament’s upper house, Valentina Matviyenko said on Friday.

“The law may be finally adopted by parliament as early as September or October, until the end of the year,” she said.

Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the State Duma, the parliament’s lower house, said earlier that the Duma may adopt the law until the end of the spring session.

Matviyenko added that Federation Council generally approves the adjustments of the tax legislation recently proposed by the government.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that the government wants to raise the retirement age to 63 for women and 65 for men gradually starting from 2019. The government also offered to raise value added tax (VAT).
